The AASA Women in School Leadership Initiative
Bruce Houck is an experienced educator in Russell, Minnesota. An educational administration graduate of the University of South Dakota, he has functioned as superintendent of the Southwest Educational Cooperative since 2015. Bruce Houck also spends time engaging with professional organizations, such as the School Superintendents Association.
The School Superintendents Association (AASA) provides educators and administrative professionals with a number of valuable services, including various leadership resources. The AASA Women In School Leadership Initiative, for example, was established in 2015. Made possible through a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the initiative was established with a goal of reducing the social barriers women face in achieving leadership positions in schools systems throughout the country.
Over the last four years, the AASA Women in School Leadership Initiative has yielded a multitude of positive results, highlighted by the more than 1,400 women who received enhanced professional leadership opportunities in regional forums, as well as nearly two dozen aspiring leaders who have benefited from mentoring services. The initiative has also led to the formation of the AASA National Women’s Leadership Consortium, which is dedicated to uncovering and resolving the many issues that prevent women from achieving leadership positions within the K-12 education system.
